(Moorabbin is thought to be an Aboriginal word meaning resting place or mother’s milk. It is thought to derive from the word “mooroobin” . It was a place for women and children to rest whilst the men hunted further afield) .St. David’s was founded on Bunurung land (aka Boonwurrung). The Bunurung were a coastal people and part of the Kulin Nation. St. David’s began life amidst a panorama of beautiful market gardens and orchards established by the European settlers.
St. David’s held its first service in 1888 in a timber school house. The building was relocated in 1927 to the corner of Pt. Nepean Rd. and Jasper St which we know today as the Nepean Hwy. and Redholme St. Moorabbin. In 1948, the small timber structure was again moved to the rear of the property to make way for the brick church we have today.
This was done under the watchful eye of the Rev. Roy Tunks. The church was dedicated in 1951, and the first services were held a week later. As Moorabbin grew from post W.W.11 development and many market gardens sub divided for housing, it was decided to extend the church in 1969. In 1970 a beautiful pipe organ was installed.
Today, St. David’s is a multi-cultural church welcoming people from all the corners of the world. We pray for vision, energy and life giving evangelism to bring to the community of Moorabbin and in many forms try to spread the good news of our Lord, Jesus Christ. We thank our heavenly Father for this church and pray that all who come here will find a welcome and a spiritual.
